National Underwriter Life & Health discusses the Medical Home as the latest healthcare financing reform idea sweeping the nation. Focusing on preventive medicine and more personalized, coordinated care, the Medical Home model elevates the role of the primary care physician in the overall health and wellness management of the patient.
A push towards the Medical Home model has already begun. Congress included funding for a Medicare patient-centered medical home demonstration project in the new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Leading health insurers, including Cigna, CareFirst, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Detroit, have launched high-profile pilots as well.
Healthcare associations are also getting in on the action. America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) supports efforts to launch and test medical home pilots and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has developed a set of medical home requirements.
